🖊️ T.S. Eliot

T.S. Eliot is a great American-born English poet, playwrightplaywright /ˈpleɪraɪt/ (n.): a person who writes plays or dramas and literary criticliterary critic (n.): a person who analyses and judges books and writing. His full name was Thomas Stearns Eliot. He was born on September 26, 1888 in Missouri to Henry Ware Eliot and Charlotte Champe Stearns.


Eliot took his higher education at Smith Academy, the boys' college preparatorypreparatory /prɪˈpærətri/ (adj.): done in order to get ready for something division of Washington University from 1898 to 1905. He studied Latin, ancient Greek, French and German. He began to write poetry when he was fourteen. His first published poem was "A Fable for Feasters". He studied philosophyphilosophy /fəˈlɒsəfi/ (n.): a particular system of beliefs, values and principles at Harvard College from 1906 to 1909. He completed B.A. in 1909 and M.A. the following year. By 1916, he completed his PhD from Harvard.


He suffered from herniahernia /ˈhɜːniə/ (n.): a medical condition in which an organ pushes through the muscle which surrounds it in his childhood. His parents hired an Irish nurse to look after him. His nurse was a catholic; this could have been a reason for his attachmentattachment (n.): strong feeling of love or connection towards someone or something and inclinationinclination /ˌɪnklɪˈneɪʃn/ (n.): a feeling that you prefer or are more likely to do a particular thing towards CatholicismCatholicism (n.): the faith and practices of the Catholic Church from his childhood. He is also remembered for his seven plays, particularly Murder in the Cathedral (1935), The Cocktail Party (1949), and The Rock (1934).
